FreeTribuna Negra: Origins of the black movement in Portugal (1911 - 1933)
with Cristina Roldão, José Pereira and Pedro Varela and moderated by Marisa Rodrigues (BANTUMEN)
Livraria Centésima PáginaFew people will know that, between 1911 and 1933, Lisbon was the scene of a black movement that fought racism, demanded rights for people in colonized territories and systematically criticized colonialism, albeit sometimes ambivalently. This generation included branches of black internationalism such as Pan-Africanism.
This book, which is the result of long and in-depth collective research, traces the life of this movement, its numerous newspapers, organizations and activists, up to the point where the rise of the dictatorship, the political persecution of its most prominent activists and internal contradictions sealed its fate.
The authors also problematize how race, gender and class crossed the movement and the political relations it established with the black diaspora in the world and with the “Cabral Generation”.
Tribuna Negra lifts the veil on a silenced history, questioning present and future generations about Black History in Portugal.
