Written in 1861 while he was imprisoned in Porto's Relação jail, it became one of the most famous sentimental novels of Portuguese Romanticism. This work portrays the tragic story of the forbidden love between the characters Simão and Teresa. Set in Portugal in the 19th century, the text explores themes such as fate, overwhelming passion and social resistance.
